The week before: what actually needs doing
Six things in the last seven days, in the order they matter. Most of the stress on moving day comes from the two at the top.

Moving day goes badly for logistical reasons, not emotional ones. These six, in this order, prevent most of it.
Seven days out: confirm the access
Book the elevator, book the loading zone, and get the certificate of insurance to both building managers. Ours is free and goes out the same day you ask.
Five days out: decide what is not coming
Everything you are not taking costs money to move. A haul-away load is $180 and it is cheaper than moving a sofa you are going to leave on a curb anyway.
Three days out: pack the rooms you do not use
Books, spare bedding, the contents of the closet you have not opened since you moved in. Label by room, not by contents, except for the kitchen.
Two days out: defrost and disconnect
The freezer needs 24 hours and a towel. Washer hoses need to be off and drained, or the drum leaks across the truck floor.
The night before: the open-first box
Kettle, mugs, a knife, phone chargers, toilet paper, medication and the paperwork. Keep it in the car, not on the truck.
The morning: park the car somewhere else
The space in front of the door is for the truck. It sounds obvious and it is the single most common reason a crew starts forty minutes late.
Need a hand with this one? A person answers, seven days a week.
